Quality Product Research – Medical: proposed rating for Minor Surgery

Medical insurance is one of the most hotly contested areas of product comparison. Adjustments are made frequently to many features and to align with this we are conducting a review of Minor Surgery. One of our rated insurers, Southern Cross, writes that in 2020, they paid out a total of $34.5 million for the removal of skin cancers and other skin lesions.

Furthermore, resources show that the vast majority of minor surgery procedures are for skin-related issues. We currently have one item called Minor Surgery in our rating database and propose to either

  1. Keep the minor surgery item and add an additional item called minor skin surgery, or
  2. Rename the current item from minor surgery to minor skin surgery (we are conscious that this may overly narrow this item if we take this approach)

It would be very helpful if you can provide us with the following information:

  • The amount of non-skin-related claims that are classed as minor surgery
  • The number of skin-related claims paid under minor surgery
  • The amount of minor surgery claims in total
